Why, right? You can use it. It has still got life in it. It is faster than taking the bus and it is classier when picking up a date. So honestly, there is really no argument here…but, actually, there is. Sure, you can donate your lunch money to a deserving charity, and every little bit does make a difference, but donating your car—that is going to help a lot. Kars for Kids is a subsidiary of a legitimate charity that will accept your car, no matter how old it is or how many fruit snacks the kids have dropped under the seat; and what’s even better, they will give you a $500 tax write-off. Obviously, the write-off isn’t the main reason to donate; it’s to help others (and we’ll get to that), but of course it’s nice to get it.

Charity is fun thing to do at times. A genuine charity function may mean good life to many orphans and children across the world. Charity can be done anywhere be it home, office or neighborhood. One can take initiative and come up with bright ideas of fund-raising and charity. For successful volunteering for donation and charity people should work in group. Initiatives can be taken at home, neighborhood, schools, offices etc. one can even work with NGO’s and other organizations working for the same cause. Teaching Your Kids About Charity.

All parents want their children to grow up to be good people. A big influence on what kind of person your child will be when they grow up is what you teach them when they are young. One thing that parents can do to help encourage your child to grow up being a generous and caring person is to teach them about charity early in their lives. A child is never to young to learn about helping others. There are plenty of things that you can do with your children to teach them about helping others and ways that they can do it. Here are a few things that you may want to try.

  1. Let them give money: During the holidays give your child some change to put in a bell ringers bucket. Explain to them what the money is used for. You can also do this year round, many grocery stores or restaurants have donation boxes for different charities.

  2. Talk to them about charity: Explain to your children about how there are less fortunate families. Tell them about how charities help these people out. Also explain to them that the charities need help to be able to help people and tell them about the different ways that people can give to a charity.

  3. Encourage them to donate: When your child gets a new toy you can have them pick out an old toy that they don’t want anymore. If the old toy is still in good shape you can tell your child that they can donate it so that another child can enjoy it. Take them with you to donate the toy to a local charity. You can also take them with you to donate clothes that they have outgrown.

Some Great Donation Ideas

So you’re thinking about donating to a charity, are you? Good for you. There is nothing quite like giving back to the community which has been good to you, whether you readily admit it or not. Your average non-profit organization is always hungry (desperate?) for any and all donations it can receive. While some people only ever think about donating their cash, there are plenty of other options which are available to you in the donation process. Of course, the best thing you can do is just call up the not-for-profit organization, and ask them what they need. After all, who would know better than they do what their own needs are?

Different not-for-profits need different things. Your first step toward giving should be to call them up, and ask them what sorts of things they might need. Maybe they need a website, and you just happen to have serious skills at putting such things together. Or maybe they need some tools, or even some trees to plant somewhere. You just never know what a charitable group might be in need of, unless you go and ask them. This is not like giving a gift to a loved one, because even though the thought certainly does count, it should not be a surprise when they receive whatever you decide to give.

Now, as far as money goes, cash is often not the best thing. While money itself is great, cash does not always make it through the mail, and it can be awkward to simply hand someone at a charity a massive stack of bills. However, remember how you can easily give someone a gift card, and light up their day. A prepaid credit card can often accomplish exactly the same result. You help a charitable organization to help other people, you get a tax deduction, and you get a good feeling. So in a sense, everybody gets something here.

How to Avoid Charity Scams.

Many people want to give to charities to help others out. There are many great charities that these people can give to, but, there are also many charity scams out there. If you are giving to charity you want to know that your donation is going to help the people that you meant for it to help. Although it is difficult to be absolutely positive your donation is going where you intended for it to go, there are a few things that you can watch out for to help you be a little bit more sure that you are avoiding the scams. Here are a few of the things you should do or watch for to try to avoid being scammed.

  1. Donate items: Most scams are people trying to collect money. If you are giving to a charity that is asking for toys for kids, food, clothes, etc. then it is probably not a scam. Most real charities will accept almost anything. If the charity you are trying to donate to refuses to accept what you are trying to donate then you should probably go somewhere else.

  2. Donate to well know organizations: Donating to a well know charity organization can help you avoid scams. Some examples are: American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc. The best way to donate to these places is to actually go to the local office to make your donation.

  3. Avoid e-mail links: Do not donate online through a link in an e-mail. Even if the e-mail looks like it is legitimate that does not mean that it is. If you want to donate online, type in the address of the charity or do a web search to find it. Most charity websites will end in .org.

Donating to Charity Without Spending Money.

There are many people who want to help out charities but do not have any extra money to give. These people think that if they have no extra money then there is nothing that they can do to help. That is incorrect, there are plenty of ways that anyone can help others without having to give money that you can’t afford to give. Here are just a few of the ways that you can give to charity without giving money.

  1. Donate Blood: The American Red Cross along with other local agencies accept blood donations at a blood bank or during a blood drive. These blood donations are used to save peoples lives who need extra blood to live. You can donate blood once every 56 days. If you have a rare blood type donating your blood can do even more good.

  2. Donate old glasses: There are a few organizations that accept donations of your old glasses. These organizations then provide glasses to people who need them and cannot afford to get glasses on their own. Two organizations that accept glasses are Unite for Sight and Lions Club International.

  3. Donate food: If you have any cans of food that you are never going to use then you can donate them to a local food shelf. Most food shelves will accept donations of any non-perishable foods. If you grow fresh fruits or vegetables you may also want to ask your local food shelf if they will accept any extra fresh food that you grow.

  4. Donate time: Doing volunteer work is a great way to help without having to give money. Most charities have work that can be done by volunteers, just contact a local charity and ask them if they need any volunteer help. If you want to volunteer without having to leave your house then you can also do virtual volunteering. Virtual volunteering is doing volunteer work over the computer. One organization that does virtual volunteering is called Dreamer.

Starting Your Own Charity.

Is there a cause that you want to help with? Do you want to be able to make a difference and help people? If the answer is yes then maybe you have already thought about starting your own charity. Starting a charity takes some work but the difference that you may be able to make can make it all worth the time and effort. Here are the steps that you will need to take to get your charity started.

  1. What kind of charity: The first thing you will need to do is decide what kind of charity you would like to start. What cause will you be supporting? How will you be getting your funding?

  2. File appropriate paperwork: You will need to find out what paperwork your state requires to be able to start a charitable organization. You will probably need to write up a mission statement describing exactly what your charity is planning to accomplish and how you are going to do it. You will want to file to receive an employer identification number if you plan on hiring employees. Also you will want to apply for non-profit charitable organization status with the IRS.

  3. Get help: You may want to find people that will volunteer to help you get your charity started. There is a lot of work that will need to be done. You may want to ask friends, family, or co-workers. You should also set up the structure of your organization such as assigning a president, secretary, treasurer, etc. You may also consider contacting other similar charities to see if they can offer you any assistance with getting you organization up and running.

  4. Let people know: Once you have all of your paperwork approved and you have people to help you the next step is to let people know about your charity. One thing you can do is to ask people you know for donations, also have the people that are helping you ask people that they know. You may also want to set up a fund-raising event.

Tax Deductions for Charitable Contributions.

Most people give to charities because it makes them feel good to help others. Did you know that giving to charity can also help you? When tax time comes many charitable contributions can be written off. To be able to deduct charitable contributions from your taxes though, you will have to itemize your deductions on your tax return.

There are certain requirements that must be met to be able to deduct your contributions on your taxes. One requirement is that you are able to itemize your deductions. You must also have donated to a qualifying tax-exempt organization. For you to be able to deduct your contribution the organization that you donate to must either be a church or have 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status. You also must have donated in the tax year that you are claiming the donation. Paying a credit card charge from a donation or pledging a donation does not count for when the donation is made. You must also keep records of what you donated and when it was donated.

Donating money is not the only way to get a tax deduction for charity. If you donate new or used items to a charity get a receipt for what you donated. You can deduct the value of the items that you donate. If you do volunteer work for a charity there are also some deductions. You cannot get a write-off for the time that you volunteered, but, you can write-off any out of pocket expenses. If you had to buy anything to do the volunteer work you can write that off, also you can deduct for mileage driven to do the volunteer work. You can also deduct lodging expenses for any full-time students who live with you and are not related to you. The student must be in high school or below, you cannot deduct for college students. If you own any land that you do not use you can also donate that. You can usually deduct the fair market value of any property donated to a qualifying charity.

How you can Donate to Your Local Community.

Are you looking for ways to give to your community? In most areas there are many ways that you can help. Whether you want to donate items, money, or time, there are a lot of options to choose from. The first thing you will want to do is to decide how you want to help. Are you going to give money to a local charity? Are you going to do volunteer work for a local shelter? Maybe you want to do something else. Here are a few ideas to help you figure out what might be the right way for you to help out.

  1. Local food shelf: You can donate non-perishable food to a local food shelf to help feed families in need. If you grow fresh fruits or vegetables some food shelves will accept that too. You could also see if they need any volunteer help.

  2. Thrift stores: If you have any items around the house that you no longer want, and they are in good shape, donate them. Most areas have non-profit thrift stores, like Salvation Army, that will accept donated goods. They will then sell them at low prices for low-income people and use the profits to help in the community.

  3. Homeless shelter: A local homeless shelter can be a great place to help. You can donate money to help with staffing and other costs. You can donate food to be given to the homeless who go there. You can also volunteer your time to help do cleaning or help prepare meals.

  4. Church: A local church is a great place to go if you want to do good. Most churches have programs to help people in need. You can donate money to help with these programs or you can ask if they need any volunteer help. Even if your church does not have any programs, they can probably help you find a place that could use your help.
