So you’re thinking about donating to a charity, are you? Good for you. There is nothing quite like giving back to the community which has been good to you, whether you readily admit it or not. Your average non-profit organization is always hungry (desperate?) for any and all donations it can receive. While some people only ever think about donating their cash, there are plenty of other options which are available to you in the donation process. Of course, the best thing you can do is just call up the not-for-profit organization, and ask them what they need. After all, who would know better than they do what their own needs are?

Different not-for-profits need different things. Your first step toward giving should be to call them up, and ask them what sorts of things they might need. Maybe they need a website, and you just happen to have serious skills at putting such things together. Or maybe they need some tools, or even some trees to plant somewhere. You just never know what a charitable group might be in need of, unless you go and ask them. This is not like giving a gift to a loved one, because even though the thought certainly does count, it should not be a surprise when they receive whatever you decide to give.

Now, as far as money goes, cash is often not the best thing. While money itself is great, cash does not always make it through the mail, and it can be awkward to simply hand someone at a charity a massive stack of bills. However, remember how you can easily give someone a gift card, and light up their day. A prepaid credit card can often accomplish exactly the same result. You help a charitable organization to help other people, you get a tax deduction, and you get a good feeling. So in a sense, everybody gets something here.

How to Avoid Charity Scams.

Many people want to give to charities to help others out. There are many great charities that these people can give to, but, there are also many charity scams out there. If you are giving to charity you want to know that your donation is going to help the people that you meant for it to help. Although it is difficult to be absolutely positive your donation is going where you intended for it to go, there are a few things that you can watch out for to help you be a little bit more sure that you are avoiding the scams. Here are a few of the things you should do or watch for to try to avoid being scammed.

  1. Donate items: Most scams are people trying to collect money. If you are giving to a charity that is asking for toys for kids, food, clothes, etc. then it is probably not a scam. Most real charities will accept almost anything. If the charity you are trying to donate to refuses to accept what you are trying to donate then you should probably go somewhere else.

  2. Donate to well know organizations: Donating to a well know charity organization can help you avoid scams. Some examples are: American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc. The best way to donate to these places is to actually go to the local office to make your donation.

  3. Avoid e-mail links: Do not donate online through a link in an e-mail. Even if the e-mail looks like it is legitimate that does not mean that it is. If you want to donate online, type in the address of the charity or do a web search to find it. Most charity websites will end in .org.

Starting Your Own Charity.

Is there a cause that you want to help with? Do you want to be able to make a difference and help people? If the answer is yes then maybe you have already thought about starting your own charity. Starting a charity takes some work but the difference that you may be able to make can make it all worth the time and effort. Here are the steps that you will need to take to get your charity started.

  1. What kind of charity: The first thing you will need to do is decide what kind of charity you would like to start. What cause will you be supporting? How will you be getting your funding?

  2. File appropriate paperwork: You will need to find out what paperwork your state requires to be able to start a charitable organization. You will probably need to write up a mission statement describing exactly what your charity is planning to accomplish and how you are going to do it. You will want to file to receive an employer identification number if you plan on hiring employees. Also you will want to apply for non-profit charitable organization status with the IRS.

  3. Get help: You may want to find people that will volunteer to help you get your charity started. There is a lot of work that will need to be done. You may want to ask friends, family, or co-workers. You should also set up the structure of your organization such as assigning a president, secretary, treasurer, etc. You may also consider contacting other similar charities to see if they can offer you any assistance with getting you organization up and running.

  4. Let people know: Once you have all of your paperwork approved and you have people to help you the next step is to let people know about your charity. One thing you can do is to ask people you know for donations, also have the people that are helping you ask people that they know. You may also want to set up a fund-raising event.

Tax Deductions for Charitable Contributions.

Most people give to charities because it makes them feel good to help others. Did you know that giving to charity can also help you? When tax time comes many charitable contributions can be written off. To be able to deduct charitable contributions from your taxes though, you will have to itemize your deductions on your tax return.

There are certain requirements that must be met to be able to deduct your contributions on your taxes. One requirement is that you are able to itemize your deductions. You must also have donated to a qualifying tax-exempt organization. For you to be able to deduct your contribution the organization that you donate to must either be a church or have 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status. You also must have donated in the tax year that you are claiming the donation. Paying a credit card charge from a donation or pledging a donation does not count for when the donation is made. You must also keep records of what you donated and when it was donated.

Donating money is not the only way to get a tax deduction for charity. If you donate new or used items to a charity get a receipt for what you donated. You can deduct the value of the items that you donate. If you do volunteer work for a charity there are also some deductions. You cannot get a write-off for the time that you volunteered, but, you can write-off any out of pocket expenses. If you had to buy anything to do the volunteer work you can write that off, also you can deduct for mileage driven to do the volunteer work. You can also deduct lodging expenses for any full-time students who live with you and are not related to you. The student must be in high school or below, you cannot deduct for college students. If you own any land that you do not use you can also donate that. You can usually deduct the fair market value of any property donated to a qualifying charity.

Charity Sans Ceremony – Not A Big Deal Provided You Inform The Charity In Advance

Should you focus on the ceremonial aspects of donating to charity organizations? Some persons enjoy a lot when their contribution is acknowledged in a formal manner. A formal letter or acknowledgment by offering invitations to charity events is considered a standard part of procedure of receiving donations.

If you do not wish to follow such an elaborate procedure and if you wish to have a low scale arrangement, then make it a point to get in touch with the administrators of the charity organization and convey your request well in advance. The last thing you want is for your name to be publicized as a generous donor when you want complete privacy.

Just to play it safe, make sure you post your request in writing. If you have sent an e-mail to the organization, have a copy of the print out in your hand just in the event you need to remind people that you do not wish any grand procedure or formality to be associated with your contribution.

If you are donating cash, you can always send it across in the hands of a trusted friend or relative or can simply post the check. However, if you are donating in kind, then you may be required to make a personal visit to the charity home.

If you are not comfortable doing so, you have the option of depositing the money to the service provider and issuing instructions that will ensure the goods or the material reaches the charitable organization in a proper manner.

Ideally, you should not hesitate to interact personally with the charity organization and should acknowledge your contribution. However, if you do not want attention for various reasons ranging from guilt to embarrassment, you can opt for many ways to contribute anonymously. Just make sure the paperwork is in your name and does not contain any flaws or mistakes.

Do Not Judge A Charity By Its Website – Look Deeper For Clues

Is the presence of a good and fancy looking website sufficient proof that the charitable organization is trustworthy? Certainly not. Setting up a fancy looking website is not a difficult task. What matters is whether the charitable organization has uploaded useful information on the same.

If its objectives, activities and goals and resources have been explained in detail and if you have a clear idea of what the organization is all about after visiting its website, this should definitely rank in its favor.

On the other hand, if you can sense that the website has been designed more as a formality and less as a medium of providing information to the public, you should be careful and do extra research before you decide upon a charitable contribution to the organization.

Charitable organizations receive donations from hundreds and thousands of individuals in a single year. They are experts in helping people donate better. Many persons come with the right intentions but have a very wrong approach towards the process.

In many cases, the charitable organization finds itself providing guidance and assistance to the donors themselves. Is there any section of the website that focuses on potential donors? Simply requesting people to donate or contribute does not make sense. Is there anything in the website that makes you feel as if your donation will be valued highly?

From details of past donations received and comments about their experiences to invitation to check out the activities of the organization by a real life visit -there are many potential steps that can help the individual wish to donate better.

Hence, do not restrict yourself to just the website and what it seems on the face of the same. Rather, focus on content and additional information to conclude whether you are dealing with a good entity or not.

Good At Counseling? A Lawyer? Offer Your Services As Charity To Abused Women

Counseling services for those individuals who emotionally and physically harass their partners often ends on a somber note. The individual realizes that his or her tendency to dominate the other person was always a cry for help. Just as the victim is provided counseling to overcome the trauma, the abuser is also provided counseling to identify the flaws in his or her own mindset and work behavior.

This means that those people who abuse their partners are not strong and dominant. Rather, they are weak and pathetic people who are trying their best to hide their flaws by abusing their partner. Charity That Hurts Self Respect Of The Receiver Is Of No Use Whatsoever

Giving to battered women or abused kids is not as easy as most people presume. Simply dumping all your torn clothes and thinking that the women and children would be pleased with such a gift is plain foolishness. Would you be interested in receiving torn clothes? Would you be interested in repairing these clothes by spending more money if you were charitable organization?

Many persons feel irritated at the fact that such organizations are very specific and particular when it comes to clothes. However, you must realize that those women and children who have been abused and battered always have a low self esteem. Improving their self esteem and self respect is the biggest challenge that such organizations face.

In such a scenario, being informed that they were given torn clothes and useless objects as gifts is only going to reinforce the sense of low self respect. So, what steps should you take?

You can convert this into a slightly bigger affair by pulling your own clothes with the torn clothes of all your neighbors and friends and relatives. You can then proceed to contact any service provider who is prepared to repair these clothes at nominal prices. Let that be the charity that you and your community are doing for such children and women.

You can then deliver these clothes in neatly packed cartons to the charitable organization. There is no harm in spreading word about such attempts and publicizing your efforts using the internet. If you don’t want to get credit, you can always keep it anonymous.

By taking this extra effort, you will be sending a message across that not only do other people care about such battered women but they are prepared to take steps to keep them happy. The realization that there is somebody outside to care for you can make a huge difference to the lives of such unfortunate people.

Want Your Charity To Make A Difference? Choose How It Should Be Spent

Prolonged money problems always lead to social issues. This recession is also not any different. As people learn to live well below their means, they find newer and innovative methods to reduce their expenses. Sadly, morality and decency often takes a backseat in the efforts of people to reduce their expenses.

Simply ignoring parents and not feeding them is often used as a strategy to save money on long term medical care. In such a scenario, the state is saddled with a responsibility of taking care of such individuals. In some cases, the children are decent enough to dispose their parents to these old age homes before it is too late.

In other cases, the state has to intervene and forcibly seek the custody of these aged individuals to ensure they do not die a horrible death. What do such charitable organizations require? It goes without saying that they will need money. Money is required for maintaining the establishment and incurring day to day expenses. However, mere money will not suffice.

You should make sure that the money that you donate is diverted towards the right areas. Taking care of day to day expenses and spending more on immediate comforts but ignoring the long term maintenance of the structure can be counterproductive in the long run.

If you are donating money, you should be prepared to take a keen interest in the activities. Of course, it does not mean that you should enter the entire process of running the institution yourself. However, you should be prepared to take all those steps that will help you understand whether your money is being spent wisely or not.

What is wise and what is necessary often depends on circumstances. In such a scenario, your additional input may make all the difference between having a good place for aged individuals to stay and having a bad place.
