While donating to a charity is in itself a feel good act, the reality is charitable donations are positive for several reasons. Taking the time to understand how making a charitable donation can impact the charity, impact your bottom line, and make you feel good, will help you understand just how important it is to make charitable donations.

First, recognize that, especially during these tough economic times, charities are in need of help. Whether you choose a charity that supports homeless or otherwise needy people or one designed to give funding to medical research, charities are in need of funding more than ever before. You may be surprised to see just what impact even a small cash donation can have.

Second, remember that it isn’t just the charity that benefits from the donation. Instead, you got a big benefit at tax time. While there are a variety of rules impacting charitable donations and tax breaks, the reality is you will be eligible for at least some sort of tax deduction when you make a contribution. Talk to your accountant or tax professional to see what documentation you will need to keep.

Finally, making a charitable donation just feels good. Know that you are helping someone in need is a great way to generate positive energy in your life.

If you have some extra cash or some gently used household items or clothing, consider making a donation. You will help out some people in need, give yourself a tax break, and make yourself feel great!

Donating to charities can be one of the most rewarding things that you can do, but most people do not know that it can help you in return. Many times, you can actually save money when you give to others.

When you donate money, food, clothing, toys or other items to a charity, always make sure that you ask for a sheet showing that you did so. This can be used as evidence to get deductions for charitable donations on your taxes. Keep them in a journal or expense record noting the date, items and the estimated value of what you donated. These can quickly add to tax savings at the end of the year.

These records can also be easily gotten when you donate online or through your cell phone. If you text a donation or pay through an online site, you can easily print off a record of the transaction. Your phone bill will have the details of a donation as well. Keep track of these throughout the year and you will be amazed at what you can save at tax time.

You should ask your accountant or tax preparer what items are eligible for deductions, what records you should keep and any limitations that there are. This will help you to keep better track of what you are donating and what you can count as deductions. These regulations can change each year, so be sure to ask your preparer for information on the most current limitations and restrictions.

If you love business and you love to help others, you can make a difference with a career in the nonprofit sector. There are many choices, and you will find a great place that feels right to you. Perhaps you love to help children. In that case, a children’s advocacy group or education organization might be a good fit. If you’re good with math and numbers and you think you have good business skills, consider accounting or fund development.

Although non profits are community-oriented, they’re still businesses, and they need great business people to run them. Most accounting positions require a degree, so consider online learning with a university like Walden University. From there, you can get either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree in accounting or another business management field. You’ll then be prepared to help your favorite cause serve its people effectively and efficiently.

As an accountant, you can help the public understand how their donations can provide a tax break. Even though most people want to give, many need to know they’ll get something in return, and tax relief is at the top of everybody’s list. If children do become your cause, think about the shelters, schools and hospitals you could be helping with your education. It may not sound like a heroic job, but it is definitely one of the most important jobs in the nonprofit sector. If the money is poorly managed, the organization’s mission cannot be achieved. However, whatever you choose for your nonprofit career, you will definitely be making an important difference.

Many generous people love giving to charities and they do so on a regular basis. A person can donate anything from furniture to cash to even his or her own time, depending on the needs of the charity. Pledging is a common term used in the world of charity organizations.

Pledging basically means that a person will promise to donate a certain amount of money to a charity. The idea of pledging is to get more donations by allowing people to promise money which they may not have at the time. Many people want to donate money to charity, but when they are asked do not have the cash immediately available to hand over. This is when running a pledge drive for a charity organization is a good idea. People can pledge the amount they are wanting to donate and then fulfill his or her promise at a later date when they have the cash available.

Giving a donor the ability to make a pledge of a donation is a good way for a charity to potentially raise more money for its cause. An even greater benefit is that pledges allow donors to pay in a variety of ways. Old ways of charity raising such as door to door knocking and shopping center fundraising only allowed for people to donate in cash. A person who has pledged money generally then has the option of paying the charity in a variety of different ways including cash, check or credit card.

You should not make a pledge unless you know you can fulfill it as many charities see it as a contract.

Many believe that you reap what you sow, meaning what you give to the world, you receive in some way. Because of today’s economy, many families and individuals are struggling to make ends meet, keep their home, or even feed themselves or their children. This makes the work for charities increasingly important. Whether donating money to a local charity or donating one’s time, both gestures are positive, selfless acts of one’s self.

Volunteering One’s Time

Many charities such as the Salvation Army, Purple Heart and Goodwill (just to name a few) are constantly reaching out for volunteers. Volunteering is an admirable act of giving to your community and those in need. Many charities have soup kitchens, offer clothes to the homeless and plant trees and gardens throughout communities, just to name a few of their projects. Each charity has a different agenda and goals’, so contacting them directly is important to discovering where your talents lie. Various charities also work with disaster relief and often send their volunteers to various locations both nationally and internationally to help relief efforts.

Using a search engine such as Canada 411 will help you find a variety of local charities that may require your items, your time or your donation. This search engine with not only give you their contact number, but also a map of where to find them and a website to browse. From there, you can determine which charities work best with your abilities, the time you have available, or the items you have to give.

Have you ever had a piece of furniture that you simply don’t want anymore? It’s been well cared for, and looks great, but it just doesn’t appeal to you. The best thing to do besides throwing it away is to donate it to charity. If an item no longer has the worth or value it once had, giving it to an organization to use benefits not only them, but also your conscience.

People tend to toss out items every day without thought. We have to remember there are others who may be less fortunate than us. These people can benefit from our gently used items. You’re not limited to just furniture, there are many good items to give to charity. Gently used children and adult clothing is a good item to give. Make sure it’s thoroughly washed before handing it over. Used books, or books you no longer read are beneficial. You may have a wonderful book collection that another person would enjoy reading.

Some people tend to donate old tools, computers and movies they no longer want or need. These items are perfect for those in need. And, in addition to going to a good cause, they won’t cost them too much. During the holidays some charity organizations take food donations. This isn’t ready to eat food, but canned and bagged goods. It only takes a few moments of your time to give, and they typically have donation bins settled just outside of grocery stores for your convenience. If you have nothing to give but a few dollars, it’s important to know that even a little amount such as that can make a difference.

Most non-profit organizations raise money for charitable causes. Organizations use the funds for everything from building houses to preserving history. While employees earn salaries, the majority of the funds go toward the charity’s mission statement. As such, the people planning the event often work on a shoestring budget.

If you’re just delving into the world of non-profit fundraising, you may need help finding ways to cut costs without sacrificing promotion. Here are a few classic ways to plan and promote your event:

Get Sponsors. Large corporations often look for opportunities to give back to the community. Additionally, businesses may get tax benefits to donate to your event. Check with large companies in your area and see whether they would be willing to purchase promotional materials, like flyers or newspaper ads, or provide funds to cater the event. Sponsors may be more willing to support your cause if you offer to advertise them on the promotional materials.

Sell tickets to the event. If you start planning soon enough, you may be able to get the event supplies free or at very little cost. That means the funds you get through ticket sales can go directly to the charity’s goal. You can even host an auction using donated gifts and prizes.

Use volunteers. People who can’t donate money may donate time. Have volunteers hand out flyers at the mall or to people walking down the street. Volunteers may go around to local businesses and ask to display promotional materials in the windows or on bulletin boards.

Planning and promoting an event doesn’t have to cost much. Take advantage of sponsors and volunteers to make the event successful.

Why, right? You can use it. It has still got life in it. It is faster than taking the bus and it is classier when picking up a date. So honestly, there is really no argument here…but, actually, there is. Sure, you can donate your lunch money to a deserving charity, and every little bit does make a difference, but donating your car—that is going to help a lot. Kars for Kids is a subsidiary of a legitimate charity that will accept your car, no matter how old it is or how many fruit snacks the kids have dropped under the seat; and what’s even better, they will give you a $500 tax write-off. Obviously, the write-off isn’t the main reason to donate; it’s to help others (and we’ll get to that), but of course it’s nice to get it.

Kars for Kids use the money from donated cars to educate children. The odds are, if you own a car, you can drive it, have a good knowledge of the world, and are rich enough to afford a car. By donating, you can help other children to learn and grow and enable them to make the same achievements that you have. And by doing so, you can make a positive difference to the world and feel good about yourself.

Kars for Kids takes your car donation and auctions the car or sells the parts. With the money made from these sales, they run Camp Oorah in New York, a stay-away camp for boys. By donating your car, you are providing these boys with fun experiences where they can grow in body, personality, and mind.

So, can you think of a better thing to do with your old car? Put it to good use; good for them and good for you!

Charity is fun thing to do at times. A genuine charity function may mean good life to many orphans and children across the world. Charity can be done anywhere be it home, office or neighborhood. One can take initiative and come up with bright ideas of fund-raising and charity. For successful volunteering for donation and charity people should work in group. Initiatives can be taken at home, neighborhood, schools, offices etc. one can even work with NGO’s and other organizations working for the same cause. Celebrity donation and auction functions have a good record and are always successful. One can arrange for such auctions and charity functions where people can donate clothing, toys, shoes, and food etc. For clever and fun ideas for charity people can work in collaboration with non governmental organizations. Volunteer for charity auction in school where children can auction for their old books, toys, clothing etc. in schools drawing competition can also be organized in which good drawing pieces can be kept for auction. Similarly art and craft function can be organized in which children and teachers can actively participate and make charity auction successful. Cooking is another way for fund raising for charity. Cooking food can be fun and one can invite people for coking and baking for charity auction. It can turn out to be successful and a good way to raise money for charity. In recent years many shows for orphan children are organized where celebrities take part and people donate whole heartedly. Such dance and music festival for good cause have turned out to be really successful. People can easily volunteer for such events and can involve their friends and relatives for organizing such donation functions. It can prove out to be really beneficial and can provide clothing and shelter to hundreds of homeless people across the country.

All parents want their children to grow up to be good people. A big influence on what kind of person your child will be when they grow up is what you teach them when they are young. One thing that parents can do to help encourage your child to grow up being a generous and caring person is to teach them about charity early in their lives. A child is never to young to learn about helping others. There are plenty of things that you can do with your children to teach them about helping others and ways that they can do it. Here are a few things that you may want to try.

Let them give money: During the holidays give your child some change to put in a bell ringers bucket. Explain to them what the money is used for. You can also do this year round, many grocery stores or restaurants have donation boxes for different charities.

Talk to them about charity: Explain to your children about how there are less fortunate families. Tell them about how charities help these people out. Also explain to them that the charities need help to be able to help people and tell them about the different ways that people can give to a charity.

Encourage them to donate: When your child gets a new toy you can have them pick out an old toy that they don’t want anymore. If the old toy is still in good shape you can tell your child that they can donate it so that another child can enjoy it. Take them with you to donate the toy to a local charity. You can also take them with you to donate clothes that they have outgrown.

So you’re thinking about donating to a charity, are you? Good for you. There is nothing quite like giving back to the community which has been good to you, whether you readily admit it or not. Your average non-profit organization is always hungry (desperate?) for any and all donations it can receive. While some people only ever think about donating their cash, there are plenty of other options which are available to you in the donation process. Of course, the best thing you can do is just call up the not-for-profit organization, and ask them what they need. After all, who would know better than they do what their own needs are?

Different not-for-profits need different things. Your first step toward giving should be to call them up, and ask them what sorts of things they might need. Maybe they need a website, and you just happen to have serious skills at putting such things together. Or maybe they need some tools, or even some trees to plant somewhere. You just never know what a charitable group might be in need of, unless you go and ask them. This is not like giving a gift to a loved one, because even though the thought certainly does count, it should not be a surprise when they receive whatever you decide to give.

Now, as far as money goes, cash is often not the best thing. While money itself is great, cash does not always make it through the mail, and it can be awkward to simply hand someone at a charity a massive stack of bills. However, remember how you can easily give someone a gift card, and light up their day. A prepaid credit card can often accomplish exactly the same result. You help a charitable organization to help other people, you get a tax deduction, and you get a good feeling. So in a sense, everybody gets something here.

Many people want to give to charities to help others out. There are many great charities that these people can give to, but, there are also many charity scams out there. If you are giving to charity you want to know that your donation is going to help the people that you meant for it to help. Although it is difficult to be absolutely positive your donation is going where you intended for it to go, there are a few things that you can watch out for to help you be a little bit more sure that you are avoiding the scams. Here are a few of the things you should do or watch for to try to avoid being scammed.

Donate items: Most scams are people trying to collect money. If you are giving to a charity that is asking for toys for kids, food, clothes, etc. then it is probably not a scam. Most real charities will accept almost anything. If the charity you are trying to donate to refuses to accept what you are trying to donate then you should probably go somewhere else.

Donate to well know organizations: Donating to a well know charity organization can help you avoid scams. Some examples are: American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc. The best way to donate to these places is to actually go to the local office to make your donation.

Avoid e-mail links: Do not donate online through a link in an e-mail. Even if the e-mail looks like it is legitimate that does not mean that it is. If you want to donate online, type in the address of the charity or do a web search to find it. Most charity websites will end in .org.

Albert, Carlos, Danny and Derrick are four men living on the streets of the Big Apple who are currently telling their stories through the microblogging site Twitter via phones that were donated to them.

Homeless people in New York have been given an online voice thanks to an innovative project using prepaid cell phones. Using the Twitter IDs @albert814, @jessie550, @putodanny, and @awitness2011, respectively, they are sharing insights into their experience living an unsettled existence with a global Internet audience.

The project, called Underheard in New York, is the brainchild of a team of creative interns serving an apprenticeship with the ad agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty. All of the interns are in their early twenties, and the ad agency challenged them to do “something good” that would gain publicity. So, they came up with the idea for Underheard in New York. The group was given a budget of $1,000 to achieve its goal. Thus, a new window into the lives of New York’s homeless population was opened.

In preparation for the project, the four volunteers were provided with a pre paid cell phone and instructions on how to operate it. Interns showed the men how to open a Twitter account and upload “tweets” to the global networking site.

Intern Willy Wang said that the project was an attempt to give a voice to the city’s homeless population, while another team member, Robert Weeks, expressed his hope that the project might spread, allowing more of those in marginalized populations to be given a voice.

So far, the men have used their new voice to share their hopes for employment and education, their joy over things that many people take for granted, such as finding a bed for the night or having enough fresh clothes to last a few days, and their disappointment at the lack of change in their own lives and environments.

There are many people who want to help out charities but do not have any extra money to give. These people think that if they have no extra money then there is nothing that they can do to help. That is incorrect, there are plenty of ways that anyone can help others without having to give money that you can’t afford to give. Here are just a few of the ways that you can give to charity without giving money.

Donate Blood: The American Red Cross along with other local agencies accept blood donations at a blood bank or during a blood drive. These blood donations are used to save peoples lives who need extra blood to live. You can donate blood once every 56 days. If you have a rare blood type donating your blood can do even more good.

Donate old glasses: There are a few organizations that accept donations of your old glasses. These organizations then provide glasses to people who need them and cannot afford to get glasses on their own. Two organizations that accept glasses are Unite for Sight and Lions Club International.

Donate food: If you have any cans of food that you are never going to use then you can donate them to a local food shelf. Most food shelves will accept donations of any non-perishable foods. If you grow fresh fruits or vegetables you may also want to ask your local food shelf if they will accept any extra fresh food that you grow.

Donate time: Doing volunteer work is a great way to help without having to give money. Most charities have work that can be done by volunteers, just contact a local charity and ask them if they need any volunteer help. If you want to volunteer without having to leave your house then you can also do virtual volunteering. Virtual volunteering is doing volunteer work over the computer. One organization that does virtual volunteering is called Dreamer.

Is there a cause that you want to help with? Do you want to be able to make a difference and help people? If the answer is yes then maybe you have already thought about starting your own charity. Starting a charity takes some work but the difference that you may be able to make can make it all worth the time and effort. Here are the steps that you will need to take to get your charity started.

What kind of charity: The first thing you will need to do is decide what kind of charity you would like to start. What cause will you be supporting? How will you be getting your funding?

File appropriate paperwork: You will need to find out what paperwork your state requires to be able to start a charitable organization. You will probably need to write up a mission statement describing exactly what your charity is planning to accomplish and how you are going to do it. You will want to file to receive an employer identification number if you plan on hiring employees. Also you will want to apply for non-profit charitable organization status with the IRS.

Get help: You may want to find people that will volunteer to help you get your charity started. There is a lot of work that will need to be done. You may want to ask friends, family, or co-workers. You should also set up the structure of your organization such as assigning a president, secretary, treasurer, etc. You may also consider contacting other similar charities to see if they can offer you any assistance with getting you organization up and running.

Let people know: Once you have all of your paperwork approved and you have people to help you the next step is to let people know about your charity. One thing you can do is to ask people you know for donations, also have the people that are helping you ask people that they know. You may also want to set up a fund-raising event.

Urban sprawl is a concept that involves the displacement of a population in certain areas. Urban sprawl certainly involves a number of ideas, and it can have a negative impact on the resulting area. Here we look at the basics of urban sprawl, including its disadvantages and how it may be prevented. The effect of urban sprawl is seen when the population of urban areas begins to move. Moving outwards to suburban areas, the populations spread thinly, creating a number of changes.

Urban sprawl is known to cause a number of disadvantages. A couple of these effects are seen, as land use is directly impacted in that it is increased dramatically. As land use is increased, the dependence on fossil fuel also grows, placing stress on the resources in the affected areas. A number of other effects, such as the displacement of animals and wildlife, are also seen. The efficiency of the area is affected in a negative manner. The suburban landscape can become inefficient due to the small amount of people per square mile that is found in such areas.

To quickly address how urban sprawl can be prevented, architects and city planners agree that proper planning can help. Elements of planning, such as property management businesses, can successfully work together. For instance, an Oceanside property management business can help plan and operate different areas of the city, maintaining a diverse and stable population.

While this is certainly a brief summary of this multifaceted concept, urban sprawl remains an important topic to address. It can affect the use of fossil fuel and resources, negatively altering the efficiency of these and other aspects of a community. Proper planning and property management businesses are two ways to combat urban sprawl. This remains an important topic for cities and communities of all sizes to address.

Most people give to charities because it makes them feel good to help others. Did you know that giving to charity can also help you? When tax time comes many charitable contributions can be written off. To be able to deduct charitable contributions from your taxes though, you will have to itemize your deductions on your tax return.

There are certain requirements that must be met to be able to deduct your contributions on your taxes. One requirement is that you are able to itemize your deductions. You must also have donated to a qualifying tax-exempt organization. For you to be able to deduct your contribution the organization that you donate to must either be a church or have 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt status. You also must have donated in the tax year that you are claiming the donation. Paying a credit card charge from a donation or pledging a donation does not count for when the donation is made. You must also keep records of what you donated and when it was donated.

Donating money is not the only way to get a tax deduction for charity. If you donate new or used items to a charity get a receipt for what you donated. You can deduct the value of the items that you donate. If you do volunteer work for a charity there are also some deductions. You cannot get a write-off for the time that you volunteered, but, you can write-off any out of pocket expenses. If you had to buy anything to do the volunteer work you can write that off, also you can deduct for mileage driven to do the volunteer work. You can also deduct lodging expenses for any full-time students who live with you and are not related to you. The student must be in high school or below, you cannot deduct for college students. If you own any land that you do not use you can also donate that. You can usually deduct the fair market value of any property donated to a qualifying charity.

Are you looking for ways to give to your community? In most areas there are many ways that you can help. Whether you want to donate items, money, or time, there are a lot of options to choose from. The first thing you will want to do is to decide how you want to help. Are you going to give money to a local charity? Are you going to do volunteer work for a local shelter? Maybe you want to do something else. Here are a few ideas to help you figure out what might be the right way for you to help out.

Local food shelf: You can donate non-perishable food to a local food shelf to help feed families in need. If you grow fresh fruits or vegetables some food shelves will accept that too. You could also see if they need any volunteer help.

Thrift stores: If you have any items around the house that you no longer want, and they are in good shape, donate them. Most areas have non-profit thrift stores, like Salvation Army, that will accept donated goods. They will then sell them at low prices for low-income people and use the profits to help in the community.

Homeless shelter: A local homeless shelter can be a great place to help. You can donate money to help with staffing and other costs. You can donate food to be given to the homeless who go there. You can also volunteer your time to help do cleaning or help prepare meals.

Church: A local church is a great place to go if you want to do good. Most churches have programs to help people in need. You can donate money to help with these programs or you can ask if they need any volunteer help. Even if your church does not have any programs, they can probably help you find a place that could use your help.

If you want to help your community in your spare time, there are many great ways to do that. One of the least glamorous but most significant is to volunteer at a halfway house. It might not sound like a lot of fun, but it can actually be extremely rewarding. You’ll be making the world a better place by helping people who are suffering (or have suffered) from drug and alcohol abuse. These are people who may feel as though society has given up on them. When you show them that’s not the case, it gives them more hope for the future. You can be partially responsible for these people turning their lives around and moving forward into bigger and better things.

It’s a wonderful feeling to help someone who’s really struggling and show that person how much beauty the world still holds. There are bad things, sure, but there are many good things that people just simply don’t notice anymore. If you’re one of the people who’s starting to forget how good you have it, volunteering at a halfway house can also remind you of the value of other people and of the things in your own life that you can be grateful for. There are plenty of them, but they can get overshadowed by life’s little annoyances sometimes.

Another benefit to volunteering in a halfway house is that it will completely and thoroughly deter you from ever getting involved with illegal substances. Seeing what those struggling people go through is painful, and it shows just how real drug and alcohol addiction can be. Celebrities have almost made it seem glamorous, but it’s not. It’s a terrible addiction that’s hard to break, and it can ruin lives. Help others and yourself by visiting TheCyn.com to see how you can help out.

What can I possibly have that a battered woman would want? I do not know them. I do not know their problems. I cannot identify why they continue living with an abusive spouse. In such a scenario, what can I possibly do in charity that would help them feel better? Difficulty in identifying with the recipient of the charity is a common reason why people opt out of actual charity.

Despite having noble intentions, they invariably end up procrastinating or ignoring their own desire to do charity. Well, what is stopping you from logging on to the internet and knowing more about battered woman?

If you feel that identifying with the misery of the victim is a prerequisite for sensible and useful charity, then why don’t you take the first step and learn more about battered woman?

The important thing is that your sense of identification with the battered woman is not relevant at all. Unless you are desirous of becoming a volunteer or counselor who provides assistance to battered woman, you can always restrict your charity to cash or in kind without understanding the problems they face.

If you are truly curious why woman continue in abusive relationships, there are adequate resources on the internet to learn more. However, do not make it a prerequisite for charity. If you wish to do some good, you will, in some way or the other, find a way. On the other hand, if you do not wish to give, then all these questions can become immovable obstacles.

If you are still finding it difficult to proceed, just log on to the internet and check out various websites and resources. Choose one that is affiliated to your local government and start donating. Once you donate for a few months, you will automatically realize that your money and charity has made a difference even if you personally have not made any.

It is obvious that the residents of safe houses for battered woman and abused children will require adequate heating facilities during the cold winter. However, you should think a bit ahead and consider the harmful effects of the excessive cold on the structure.

The structure may seem safe today. However, the excessive cold may have led to contraction of water pipes and other structures in the house. The insulation may have lost its ability to keep the heat inside and the cold outside. This combined with minor damage to the roof means that water is going to seep into the home when it rains.

The presence of water combined with heat is going to cause expansion in the various joints and beams in the structure. This is the reason why proper maintenance of a structure is an unending process. Where the building or safe house is catering to a large number of individuals at once, it is obvious that maintenance expenses will be very high.

In such a scenario, you can do your bit and offer donations specifically directed towards the maintenance of the building. If you have enjoyed a windfall income, you can contribute a significant portion of the same and contact a few other big shot contributors and try and set up a building maintenance fund for the institution. The building maintenance fund will be deposited with a reputed bank and the investment will earn interest.

Only the interest income can be used for carrying out the maintenance activities. The best part is that such a donation takes care of the building maintenance requirements not just for one or two years but for many years at a stretch. You have the option of retaining control over the fund and may choose to release it only when you are satisfied that the funds will be utilized for a beneficiary purpose.

Should you focus on the ceremonial aspects of donating to charity organizations? Some persons enjoy a lot when their contribution is acknowledged in a formal manner. A formal letter or acknowledgment by offering invitations to charity events is considered a standard part of procedure of receiving donations.

If you do not wish to follow such an elaborate procedure and if you wish to have a low scale arrangement, then make it a point to get in touch with the administrators of the charity organization and convey your request well in advance. The last thing you want is for your name to be publicized as a generous donor when you want complete privacy.

Just to play it safe, make sure you post your request in writing. If you have sent an e-mail to the organization, have a copy of the print out in your hand just in the event you need to remind people that you do not wish any grand procedure or formality to be associated with your contribution.

If you are donating cash, you can always send it across in the hands of a trusted friend or relative or can simply post the check. However, if you are donating in kind, then you may be required to make a personal visit to the charity home.

If you are not comfortable doing so, you have the option of depositing the money to the service provider and issuing instructions that will ensure the goods or the material reaches the charitable organization in a proper manner.

Ideally, you should not hesitate to interact personally with the charity organization and should acknowledge your contribution. However, if you do not want attention for various reasons ranging from guilt to embarrassment, you can opt for many ways to contribute anonymously. Just make sure the paperwork is in your name and does not contain any flaws or mistakes.

If you are looking for a way to help your community, consider volunteering at a local halfway house. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that between September 2008 and September 2009, 63.4 million Americans volunteered their time. Volunteers provide a sense of vitality and purpose to halfway house residents, which is a key element in helping others to be successful in kicking their addictions.

The ability to help others in need provides a great sense of satisfaction, pride and accomplishment that some people cannot put into words. Volunteering will strengthen your sense of belonging; it is empowering, humbling and therapeutic. When you help others to live a better life, you are making the world a better place.

In the last 20 years, research has shown that volunteering provides health benefits as well as social benefits. This research has proven that volunteers have lower mortality rates, lower rates of depression, and greater functional ability. The older a volunteer is the more health benefits there are, which experts believe is due to the social and physical activity, and the feeling of being needed and having a purpose.

Volunteering also provides the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people. For example, if you volunteered at MichaelsHouse.com, you might be asked to create a flyer about an upcoming event. You find that you like the creativity involved in doing such work and ask to create more flyers in the future. You can add this new skill to your resume. You’ll get to know other volunteers, staff members, and patients, making new friends. You could also network with others that have similar interests, goals, and dreams.

When you volunteer at a halfway house and see firsthand how drug and alcohol abuse ruins people’s lives and you’ll think twice about abusing those substances. You’ll see how precious life, family, and friends are and you will never take these people for granted.

What is worse than not giving to charities? Giving to a charity that does not deserve the donation is an even bigger mistake. Whether you like it or not, there are numerous individuals and organizations that specialized in fooling people by tugging at their hearts and claiming that the money is being diverted towards charity.

Hence, there is nothing wrong in making sure that the charitable organization that you are dealing with is honest and genuine. If the charity insists on cash donations and does not encourage payment of donations by check, it is obviously a negative sign. This is because opening a bank account requires registration and compliance with regulations.

If the charity does not have a bank account, it is either so small that it operates without formal bank support or it has not complied with the registration process and is not trustworthy. Certain charities may be in the process of complying with the regulations and may not be accepting donations by check for short period.

In such a scenario, you can visit the charity and find out whether any real work is being done or not. However, if the charity claims to be well established in its field but does not have a bank account, it should automatically raise warning bells in your mind.

Such a process is not advisable because maintaining a paper trail for cash donations is next to impossible. Apart from the receipt that is issued to you after payment of cash, you have absolutely no proof that you have paid money.

On the other hand, when you make a payment by check, you automatically incorporate a third party-the banks, into the process. In any case, the taxmen will always insist on proof of payment and validation of the proof before you can claim any tax benefit on the same. Hence, payment by check is the smartest option if you intend to enjoy tax benefits in the future.

In the world of charitable giving and helping people in times of need, there is a new concept coming to the forefront called microgiving. Microgiving consists of many people becoming involved in an area of need and helping to resolve that need through time, money, and/or resources, without expecting something in return.

Of course, this concept is not new, except that now, through mediums like the Internet and social networks, individuals and businesses from all over the world can help people and get involved in charitable giving.

Think about that.

This means that someone from South Africa and someone from Britain can be involved in helping a person, or a group, in Chile; and they can know that it is a legitimate charity or need for help. How cool is that?

It is a fact that most people would like to become involved and help someone in need. Unfortunately, most of us cannot contribute heavily in the financial area. With microgiving, many people can come together to help one individual, one family, one neighborhood, one town, maybe even one country.

Think about that.

What would it be like to help one individual keep their heat on and, at the same time, help a town that has just been devastated by an earthquake? What would it be like to know that many others, just like you, who can’t give a lot, are joining together to help make good things happen?

This is the concept of microgiving. It is a way for people to become part of a giving community that can help others in times of need across the world or right next door. It is working together to bring help and happiness to those that are suffering and to be part of a community that cares – all for about the price of a cup of latte.

Think about that.

The future is brighter as this concept grows. Now is your chance to get involved.

Is the presence of a good and fancy looking website sufficient proof that the charitable organization is trustworthy? Certainly not. Setting up a fancy looking website is not a difficult task. What matters is whether the charitable organization has uploaded useful information on the same.

If its objectives, activities and goals and resources have been explained in detail and if you have a clear idea of what the organization is all about after visiting its website, this should definitely rank in its favor.

On the other hand, if you can sense that the website has been designed more as a formality and less as a medium of providing information to the public, you should be careful and do extra research before you decide upon a charitable contribution to the organization.

Charitable organizations receive donations from hundreds and thousands of individuals in a single year. They are experts in helping people donate better. Many persons come with the right intentions but have a very wrong approach towards the process.

In many cases, the charitable organization finds itself providing guidance and assistance to the donors themselves. Is there any section of the website that focuses on potential donors? Simply requesting people to donate or contribute does not make sense. Is there anything in the website that makes you feel as if your donation will be valued highly?

From details of past donations received and comments about their experiences to invitation to check out the activities of the organization by a real life visit -there are many potential steps that can help the individual wish to donate better.

Hence, do not restrict yourself to just the website and what it seems on the face of the same. Rather, focus on content and additional information to conclude whether you are dealing with a good entity or not.

Counseling services for those individuals who emotionally and physically harass their partners often ends on a somber note. The individual realizes that his or her tendency to dominate the other person was always a cry for help. Just as the victim is provided counseling to overcome the trauma, the abuser is also provided counseling to identify the flaws in his or her own mindset and work behavior.

This means that those people who abuse their partners are not strong and dominant. Rather, they are weak and pathetic people who are trying their best to hide their flaws by abusing their partner. It is important to prove the other individual as inferior so that the weak individual can convince himself or herself that weakness is not a problem.

This is the reason why the mere threat of legal action is sufficient to bring a majority of abusive husbands in line. Once matters end in the courts and once the court orders in favor of the women, the men quickly back out of the confrontation and prefer to grumble and complain in the privacy of their homes.

If you are a lawyer, you can take advantage of this tendency to provide relief to battered women. You can offer to represent them for free in courts of law. The mere fact that the wife can now threaten the husband with legal action and can opt for divorce instead of living in an abusive relationship can make a huge difference.

Despite your offer, many women may prefer sticking to their abusive husband. However, the fact that there is somebody out there for them who will fight for them has a very positive effect on their mindset.

In such a scenario, whether you offer your services directly to the abused women or whether you work through a charitable organization that will provide additional services as well, you can be rest assured of making a huge difference.

What is the difference between an animal’s existence and human being’s lifestyle? Animals focus on instincts and always worry about the next meal. You will never see animals congregating together for an art show or a musical experience. On the other hand, providing food, shelter and clothing to an individual and expecting him or her to remain satisfied for the rest of life is asking a lot.

You must keep this point in mind when you are making donations to charity. Just because an abused child is living in a safe house does not mean he or she loses the right to feel like enjoying entertainment options. Just as your child likes to go to the concert or spend a weekend at the cinema, the child at the safe house too deserves such entertainment options.

Of course, there may be many other factors to consider and the trip to cinema may not be as simple as it is with your child. However, what is stopping you from sponsoring an in-house cinema or film experience? All you need is the necessary infrastructure and sufficient space for all the inmates or residents of the institution to have a lot of fun.

It is not necessary to wait for Christmas or other festive occasions for such entertainment options. While the world focuses on charity and needy individuals during festival season, you can do your bit and bring some cheer into their lives just to break the routine.

You do not wait for Christmas to watch a movie, right? From securing passes to a concert to getting tickets for a football or basketball game – there are many options.

It may be just another trip for you but it may be a major event for a child who has been cooped up in a safe house. Before you conclude that it is a small thing, just try to look at it from the perspective of the receiver.

Why should the child suffer just because the mother happens to marry an abusive husband? You cannot afford to ignore children when you are thinking about charity for abused women. The abused women often rely on their children for emotional support. In such a scenario, the entire experience can become very traumatic for such children.

When you are donating money, you can do your bit to make life of such children a bit easier. They may not be living at home and may be living in a safe house where they are secure from the abusive parent. However, living in a drab place with absolutely no source of entertainment can easily create psychological problems in the kids themselves.

From toys to new clothes to books to other entertainment options-there are many things that your child enjoys to have a fulfilling life. Even if you are not in a position to provide the same to abused children, you can always do your bit to help their life become easier.

From books and fiction to a computer to surf the internet- there are many things that you can donate without putting your finances under stress. It may not be the best computer in the world but the fact that the child can connect to the world outside despite insecurities and difficulties can make a huge difference.

In the same way, educational resources like hand-me-down books of the previous grades can help the parent save money in the long run. This may make a huge difference to the child as he or she may be in a position to continue education despite not being financially secure.

The child is going to become the future citizen of society. By investing your efforts in taking care of such abused children, you are merely making the world a safer place. A disturbed child today may easily gravitate to crime and antisocial elements tomorrow. Your charity can prevent that.

Getting involved and giving back are wonderful things for any person to do. While it helps to give money, and there are those that will benefit from it, there is a different sense of goodwill and fulfillment from giving your time and energy to a worthy cause. It’s something different when you can see the difference being made and the people you are helping.

Of course, if you want to give your time to a worthy cause, there are plenty of options out there. From feeding the hungry, to working for those with disabilities, the options are endless. The key is finding something that you are passionate about and helping others in that same way. Drawing from personal experience will help you find something that can be worth your time and energy to do. Here are a few examples.

If you or someone you know has had issues in their life with finances and debt, then there are a couple of ways to volunteer and give your time. Working with a debt consolidation service is a great way to help those in need reduce their debt by giving them one manageable monthly payment. It’s this sort of service that can pull someone from being a paycheck away from the poor house, to feeling secure and comfortable again.

If you are interested in the well being of others, and providing constant support to those in need, then you might want to volunteer as a Big Brother or Big Sister. It’s an organization that helps children who are less fortunate, often foster children, to gain a support system through a big brother or big sister. It’s a chance to spend time with them and take them out. It’s a bonding experience and provides many with a connection that can be maintained through life. There is some training that goes along with it, but it’s worth the time. There is no better feeling than giving back.

Giving to battered women or abused kids is not as easy as most people presume. Simply dumping all your torn clothes and thinking that the women and children would be pleased with such a gift is plain foolishness. Would you be interested in receiving torn clothes? Would you be interested in repairing these clothes by spending more money if you were charitable organization?

Many persons feel irritated at the fact that such organizations are very specific and particular when it comes to clothes. However, you must realize that those women and children who have been abused and battered always have a low self esteem. Improving their self esteem and self respect is the biggest challenge that such organizations face.

In such a scenario, being informed that they were given torn clothes and useless objects as gifts is only going to reinforce the sense of low self respect. So, what steps should you take?

You can convert this into a slightly bigger affair by pulling your own clothes with the torn clothes of all your neighbors and friends and relatives. You can then proceed to contact any service provider who is prepared to repair these clothes at nominal prices. Let that be the charity that you and your community are doing for such children and women.

You can then deliver these clothes in neatly packed cartons to the charitable organization. There is no harm in spreading word about such attempts and publicizing your efforts using the internet. If you don’t want to get credit, you can always keep it anonymous.

By taking this extra effort, you will be sending a message across that not only do other people care about such battered women but they are prepared to take steps to keep them happy. The realization that there is somebody outside to care for you can make a huge difference to the lives of such unfortunate people.

There are all sorts of people in the world who are determined to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. You can find these philanthropic heroes in some of the unlikeliest of places. They come in all shapes and sizes and from many different backgrounds and provide excellent sources of inspiration for children to look up to these days.

One philanthropist who is making new headlines these days is Toms Shoes founder and former The Amazing Race contestant, Blake Mycoskie. After witnessing the extreme poverty in Argentina along with the fact that most children there didn’t even own a pair of shoes, he decided to take action. For every pair of shoes sold by his company, one pair is donated to a child in need. The concept is very simple and very effective.

Bill Gates is another excellent role model when it comes to philanthropy. In addition to having donated $300 million to a Florida school district, he and his wife, Melinda Gates, have created the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Their foundation is dedicated to tackling some of the tougher philanthropic problems like health and poverty in countries that are designated as developing countries.

Warren Buffet is also a major contributor the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and has pledged a huge portion of his estate to charity upon his death.

Mark Zuckerburg, widely known for founding Facebook, has also made a name for himself as a philanthropist worth taking note of. Not only has he donated $100 million to public schools in Newark, NJ but has also taken the “giving pledge” in which he pledged a large portion of his wealth to charity.

Big names like these are on the tips of everyone’s tongues and they just go to show that if everyone were to make small steps to change the world, big changes are really possible.

Prolonged money problems always lead to social issues. This recession is also not any different. As people learn to live well below their means, they find newer and innovative methods to reduce their expenses. Sadly, morality and decency often takes a backseat in the efforts of people to reduce their expenses.

Simply ignoring parents and not feeding them is often used as a strategy to save money on long term medical care. In such a scenario, the state is saddled with a responsibility of taking care of such individuals. In some cases, the children are decent enough to dispose their parents to these old age homes before it is too late.

In other cases, the state has to intervene and forcibly seek the custody of these aged individuals to ensure they do not die a horrible death. What do such charitable organizations require? It goes without saying that they will need money. Money is required for maintaining the establishment and incurring day to day expenses. However, mere money will not suffice.

You should make sure that the money that you donate is diverted towards the right areas. Taking care of day to day expenses and spending more on immediate comforts but ignoring the long term maintenance of the structure can be counterproductive in the long run.

If you are donating money, you should be prepared to take a keen interest in the activities. Of course, it does not mean that you should enter the entire process of running the institution yourself. However, you should be prepared to take all those steps that will help you understand whether your money is being spent wisely or not.

What is wise and what is necessary often depends on circumstances. In such a scenario, your additional input may make all the difference between having a good place for aged individuals to stay and having a bad place.

The requirements of charitable organization will depend a lot on the target audience that it serves. If the charitable organization provides safe home for abused children and young girls, then you should consider not only the immediate requirements of these inmates but of the long term requirements as well.

What is the point of taking care of the children until they become adults and then leaving them without any support structure whatsoever? It is obvious that the children residing in the charitable institution must enjoy quality education. There are numerous government schemes that will step in and provide assistance to such students.

If the charitable organization is not aware of such schemes, you can do your bit by contacting the necessary authorities and facilitating the link. Further, you can participate in the education of the children and try to ensure they do not lack for facilities and amenities simply because they do not have lots of money.

A field trip to a major urban center or to a place of historical importance is an integral part of the proper education of the child. The institution may have enjoyed government support to pay for the tuition fees and other basic amenities. However, a trip to a nearby urban center is obviously going to cost a lot of money.

You can do your bit by planning for such a trip well in advance. Once you contact other contributors and generate sufficient funds, you can approach the institution and make an offer to fund or sponsor a field trip. Such a move can make a huge difference to the psych of the individuals who are residing in institution.

For starters, they will be happy at the fact that they were treated as something more than mere obligations to be fulfilled. Secondly, the educational impact apart, they will definitely enjoy the chance of spending a normal childhood and enjoying visits to different places.

Any and every responsible parent will start worrying about the few future prospects of the child the moment he or she enters adolescence. It is only when you start your research early can you provide the right career advice to your teenage child. Well, have you ever wondered who provides career advice to the residents of charitable institutions that provide protection to battered women and children?

In many cases, even a single aptitude test can help the child understand his or her strengths better and act accordingly. Of course, it is not just a question of the scores in the aptitude test alone.

The fact that the individual feels that he or she has been tested and has somebody to care for him or her is definitely going to make a huge impact. How much time will it take to compile an aptitude test and get it graded properly? You can easily find experts in the educational field who will be more than willing to offer their services as charity to the institution.

Further, you can make use of the internet to provide various career related advice. If you are not comfortable interacting with such children directly, you can make use of the internet and coordinate with the administrator of the charitable organization to execute your plans.

At the end of the day, even if you help a few persons choose the right career and get set in life, you would have made a huge contribution. If you consider the monetary aspect, you will realize that the entire process does not cost any money whatsoever.

You just have to use your contacts and use your enthusiasm to give these children a chance of becoming somebody in life. You may find it difficult to wipe out the psychological scars but you can help them become financially secure to face life with confidence.

So many people out there are compelled to give during the holiday season. As it approaches they think to themselves "yeah, this is a good idea." But somewhere along the line they get caught up in their own holiday busyness and there giving heart falls by the wayside. They end up projecting their generosity onto their friends and family. Certainly there is nothing wrong with getting in the spirit with friends and family, but where was the love for those who really need it?

Charities during the holidays are of the utmost importance. While it makes sense year round, many charities, especially those involving children, are really poised to make their biggest push. Being a part of that push will certainly put the generous holiday giver in an advantageous position. They will have the advantage of giving back to the community during this wonderful time of year.

In many places all over the world there is a drive called Toys For Tots. It’s a wonderful holiday giving experience. Kids who are less fortunate select items on a wish list. They write down three of the things they would really want for the holiday season. You, the charitable giver, will select a few of these items on their list and go purchase them. These kids will then receive the gifts during the holidays. For those that have never had the chance to change the life of a child it’s a wonderful charity just for the experience to feel that. It’s one of the very best things someone can do.

If the charitable person isn’t interested in giving toys and would like to make their purpose a little more practical then there are a large number of charities out there where people can purchase coats for children. Coat donation is also accepted, but since the condition of the coats are often questionable, it is preferred that these coats be new.

The holiday season means a lot of different things to different people. For many it’s a time to spend with family and friends. It’s about decorations, holiday parties and a chance to spend time catching up with those who you don’t get a chance to see much. For others the holidays aren’t always a happy time. They might be a time that reminds them of the loss of a loved one or a stressful time of the season at work.

Then there is a third category of people who see the holiday season as the perfect opportunity to give back to the less fortunate. They see the advantages they have in their life as making them blessed, and they see the season as a chance to show their appreciation for just how lucky they are. For that reason many of these wonderfully blessed people decide to give back. If you are one of these people who are looking to give back, the holiday presents many wonderful ways to give back. Here are a couple of them.

The first is the food drives. During the holiday season charities are out in full force collecting for the less fortunate. They are looking to get the most amount of food possible for those who really need it. You may have seen the ads and the campaigns for it around the house. This is the time of year where you should be giving back. These drives accept non perishables. This means food that isn’t going to expire.

If you are interested in giving food to the less fortunate, but aren’t interested in donating food, you can always donate your time. There are soup kitchens that will be giving food out on Christmas Eve and Christmas day, as well as other times throughout the holiday season. This is a great way for you to feel an immediate impact in what you are doing for others during the holiday season.

Sometimes giving to others is something that you forget to do. It’s never something you refuse to do, but rather it’s something that falls by the wayside during your busy life. However, during the holiday season you should be looking for ways to give back. It’s the time of year where you can really celebrate just how fortunate you are and it’s a time to remember that there are those out there who aren’t as lucky as you are.

If you are interested in giving back this holiday season there are a lot of things you can do to help out others. Here are a few of the things you can do.

The first is organize your own toy drive. This might seem like a lot of work but it can actually something that can be a lot of fun. You should collect toys, or cash for toys from friends and family. Ask for five or ten dollars a person. Certainly you will take more if they can give more. But you don’t have to have much.

With the money that you get you take it to the local toy store and start to stock up. Get smaller gifts and things that are one sale. Get toys that are good for just boys, just girls, and both. Once you do that you should have amassed quite a collection of toys. If you think about it you can talk to the manager and let him or her know that you are buying for a toy drive and they may be able to cut you a break.

Once you have the toys you should take them over to the local children’s hospital. There you can bring them to the kids on the floor who are spending the night in a hospital, many with very serious health conditions. This is great way to give back to those who are less fortunate.

During the holiday season the good natured feelings of men and women are out in full force. There are a growing number of people during that time that find it within themselves to give back to the world that they feel so blessed to be in. There are a number of great charities that are looking for help money and items to give to those in need. The issue isn’t with the idea of giving or the help that so many need. It’s with the number of scams that occur during the holiday season. While there is no question that the majority of the people are interested in helping others, there are some that are only interested in helping themselves.

The issue for many is distinguishing those with good intentions, and those with bad intentions. There is a growing number of bad charities out there. The average person should stick with charities that they know about. If a charity they have never heard of is looking for money or donations they should at least question it before proceeding. If they know no one who has ever been a part of the charity then they should just wait to give to a charity that they know full and well it’s intentions are good.

They should never give to a charity that contacts them. Many charities are not in the business of cold calling. Even with the line that they may have obtained the information on a website, they should still not be contacting anyone about giving to charity. If a charity is contacting out of the blue there is big reason to doubt if it’s a charity at all.

The key to giving during the holiday season is to go with the names of charities you know and approach the charity about giving. Doing these things will make the holiday season just a little brighter.

The holiday season is about spending time with you and your loved ones. It’s about giving to those who have less and it’s about taking the time to realized just how truly blessed you are to be alive and have the life you have. It’s something that everyone can understand and revel on. However, for many it is also a time to teach children a valuable lesson about what the true definition of charity is and how they can be a part of the giving season. Don’t waste this opportunity to build a person of substance, or someone who understands how to appreciate the gifts they have been given. Here are two ways to energize your child to giving during the holiday season.

The first thing to do is make them donate some of their toys. There are toy drives all over the country and they are always looking for new and used toys. Telling your child that you are going to ask them to give up toys for other kids will be a good start to the giving season. The trick is to make sure that the child gives up toys that they like and that they play with often. It’s a good example of what it truly means to sacrifice for someone else.

The next thing to do is to take them shopping for others. Taking them shopping for the toys for tots program is a great way to teach them a lesson about why the holidays are about giving. It’s important to make the trip all about the other kids. Buying your child toys while shopping for the less fortunate is not a good message to send. Make your child go without for that trip and make them involved in the toy buying experience.

These are just some ways to teach kids the importance of giving. It’s a valuable life lesson that will serve them well.

As a director at a non-profit charity, I am always looking for ways to raise money. We do get grants each year to help with some of our operating expenses. However, those funds do not go very far. In order to keep a staff working and helping keep all of our programs for educating underprivileged children afloat; we have to get creative. We do utilize a lot of volunteers. And we also have a lot of local businesses provide supplies like school equipment, office furniture and even food for our staff and children. But each year my staff and myself get together to come up with some way to raise money. A lot of times we use events and parties to raise money. So this year we decided to have a charity poker tournament. With the popularity of the game these days, we thought this would be the perfect fundraiser.

We were lucky enough to have a local recreation center provide us with a large room for the tournament. We had a caterer provide food and drinks for free. We also had local business owners volunteer as dealers for each of the tables. We offered many prizes also donated by those in the community. But quite possible the coolest thing of all was that we were able to use custom poker tables. A few businesses chipped in to buy these tables from an online company. They were exactly like the tables you see in tournaments on television. They were covered in green felt and had a soft, leather armrest. Each table was a full casino size and style poker table. One of the coolest things was that these tables were then auctioned off after the tournament to raise even more money. All in all, our charity tournament was a huge success and might just become an annual event.

Giving is a wonderful chance to give back to the world. It’s a time to show those less fortunate that there is someone out there who is thinking of them and is willing to do what it takes to pick them up off the ground. There are few things a person can do that are more rewarding and fulfilling then donate their time and money to charity.

While the government is fully aware that it is an act done out of the kindness of their own heart, the government also knows that it’s a good opportunity to reward these thoughtful people will a break in their taxes. If you re someone who is currently giving to a charity then this a great reason why you should up the ante a little more and catch yourself a tax break.

A tax break is when the government deducts money from your taxable income. Let’s say a man makes 30,000 dollars a year with no pre tax money coming out of his check. This would make the full amount of his salary(30,000) taxable to the government. However, if this man gives 5,000 a year to charitable causes then it reduces the amount that the government can tax him on to 25,000. This makes the amount of the money the government can tax him on less.

This is a benefit for anyone who is looking to save a little money to Uncle Sam. The only way to do this successfully is to get a receipt for everything that is donate. If you donate clothes then get a slip stating the amount you donated. This will give you a free and clear path to taking that from your taxable income. If you give money to church then do so in the form of a check so the money you give can be documented. These deductions will allow you to feel good about yourself and will allow you a chance to save money.

When people decide to give to a good cause they are often looking at that decision for it’s tax benefits. There are a lot of ways that the government will support those who support those in need. They give a lot of compensation to the good doers, but that isn’t to say that those good deeds and appreciation from the government don’t come without any rules or restrictions. As a matter of fact the government is willing to help, but they have to make sure people are respectful of the integrity of their gift.

When an individual gives to a charity there are a number of rules they have to follow if they want compensation for their good deeds. For instance a person who volunteers in the mornings at a soup kitchen might be inclined to deduct money from their federal income tax for the time they spent in the charitable service of others. They might determine since they are a lawyer and have a set hourly fee that they can deduct that over the hours they work. This isn’t the case. An individual cannot take a tax deduction on the time they spent in service. This would frankly open up the government to a world of inappropriate tax practices.

A person willing to make a charitable contribution to a person is not something that they can tax deduct. Even if the friend is collecting as a part of a larger donation to a charity, it can not be tax deducted. This means that for individuals looking to get a break on the money they gave they are best off going through the charities directly. This should keep everyone in a position to save the most out of their taxable donations.

It feels good to give back, but it feels better when it can be taxed properly. These tips should help the charitable feel more aware of the pitfalls.

Being charitable is a valued part of life. There is an immense sense of pride that one person feels from giving back to their community or country. In the United States they are often greeted with a very generous offer: taxation benefits for those who decide to give. These benefits can reduce a person’s taxable income and that could lead to a variety of benefits in the money a person saves and what they can do with that savings. While it’s never the intention of someone to give in order to receive a benefit, but it is important for those that wish to take advantage of the benefits to know the various rules that apply. Here are a few of those rules.

Many charities will often attempt to raise money through raffles and carnival games. Their feeling is that a game of chance is a great way to gain people’s interest and keep them playing. This is a fun way to accept donations for a good cause. The down side to this is that those playing the games cannot claim the money on their income tax. The reason for this rule is two fold. The first reason is that these games are usually not accompanied by a receipt. This means that there is no accuracy in reporting just how much was spent. It would be easy for someone to claim they spent $100 on raffle tickets even though they may not have. The other reason is that these are games of chance. They are not clear cut money that goes to the charity, plus they are not clear cut money that a person will lose. That is why when a charity raises money in the case of a poker tournament they have a set charitable amount and there might be a way to recoup the entry fee. But the winnings and losses at the table is a completely separate, and not tax friendly.

Getting tax breaks from the government for contributions made to charities is one of the nice perks to living in America. The government recognizes the generosity of the tax payers and, in turn, the tax payers get to save money on their taxable income. It’s increasingly nice because the more money they give, the less money they have to pay in taxes at the end of the year.

While many people feel encouraged to give more because of this generous gift, there are some rules and regulations that the government must enact in order to keep it fair to themselves, and to others. They cannot have the someone claiming more than half of their money on charitable contributions just to avoid taxation. Everyone needs proof and needs to adhere to some of the laws made.

The first interesting thing that the Internal Revenue Service has done is create rules to entertainment functions for charity. Let’s say the city in which you live in, is getting together a collection of bands to perform at the local stadium for an event to help endangered youth. You might go to this event and have to pay the adjusted ticket price of 500 dollars. It’s an auction price for the seats and so you of course over payed.

The idea for many is that when tax season comes around they will be able to write off the full 500 dollars of the ticket price as a way to reduce their taxable income. However, when it comes to a stadium ticket or to see a movie or play, a person can only write off over the fair value for the ticket. So assuming you see the value of a festival ticket at 100 dollars, then you could write off the remaining money. Charity doesn’t mean that you get to go to a show for free. It means that you can write off what you overpaid for.

Giving to those in need is a very selfless thing. There are times, though, when giving benefits the individual who’s being so generous. There is no reason to not take advantage of the tax breaks, but there is reason to be aware of the finer points of doing so. There is no way to just estimate charitable costs and submit no proof. Everything that is done must be done with the right working knowledge in order to do it legally. There are some simple inside and out rules.

One of the misnomers is that charity can be deducted no matter what the charitable organization is. That is, unfortunately, false. Charitable contributions can be written off if they are given to an organization that is on the Internal Revenue Services list of approved charities. If a person or an organization is not on that list they cannot let a person write off the giving. This is to prevent tax fraud. That’s why it’s still the best practice to give money to people who are with established organizations.

The next thing to know is that everything that is donated, including money, is donated under the umbrella of fair market value. This is simply what an item would go for sale in the current market. This means that when the housing market is flush a house donated to charity would go for twice as much money as a house donated in a down market. This doesn’t mean that items are low balled either. It’s about being fair. A car would get what the value of it is at face value, not what someone in particular values it to be.

Navigating through charitable contributions isn’t easy, but for that reason it’s best to get a solid tax accountant. They should be able to help figure out what is and isn’t going to fly with the IRS. These rules shouldn’t stop people from giving, just make them more careful.
