While donating to a charity is in itself a feel good act, the reality is charitable donations are positive for several reasons. Taking the time to understand how making a charitable donation can impact the charity, impact your bottom line, and make you feel good, will help you understand just how important it is to make charitable donations.

First, recognize that, especially during these tough economic times, charities are in need of help. Whether you choose a charity that supports homeless or otherwise needy people or one designed to give funding to medical research, charities are in need of funding more than ever before. You may be surprised to see just what impact even a small cash donation can have.

Second, remember that it isn’t just the charity that benefits from the donation. Instead, you got a big benefit at tax time. While there are a variety of rules impacting charitable donations and tax breaks, the reality is you will be eligible for at least some sort of tax deduction when you make a contribution. Talk to your accountant or tax professional to see what documentation you will need to keep.

Finally, making a charitable donation just feels good. Know that you are helping someone in need is a great way to generate positive energy in your life.

If you have some extra cash or some gently used household items or clothing, consider making a donation. You will help out some people in need, give yourself a tax break, and make yourself feel great!

Donating to charities can be one of the most rewarding things that you can do, but most people do not know that it can help you in return. Many times, you can actually save money when you give to others.

When you donate money, food, clothing, toys or other items to a charity, always make sure that you ask for a sheet showing that you did so. This can be used as evidence to get deductions for charitable donations on your taxes. Keep them in a journal or expense record noting the date, items and the estimated value of what you donated. These can quickly add to tax savings at the end of the year.

These records can also be easily gotten when you donate online or through your cell phone. If you text a donation or pay through an online site, you can easily print off a record of the transaction. Your phone bill will have the details of a donation as well. Keep track of these throughout the year and you will be amazed at what you can save at tax time.

You should ask your accountant or tax preparer what items are eligible for deductions, what records you should keep and any limitations that there are. This will help you to keep better track of what you are donating and what you can count as deductions. These regulations can change each year, so be sure to ask your preparer for information on the most current limitations and restrictions.

Make a Difference with a Career in the Nonprofit Sector

If you love business and you love to help others, you can make a difference with a career in the nonprofit sector. There are many choices, and you will find a great place that feels right to you. Perhaps you love to help children. In that case, a children’s advocacy group or education organization might be a good fit. If you’re good with math and numbers and you think you have good business skills, consider accounting or fund development.

Although non profits are community-oriented, they’re still businesses, and they need great business people to run them. Most accounting positions require a degree, so consider online learning with a university like Walden University. From there, you can get either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree in accounting or another business management field. You’ll then be prepared to help your favorite cause serve its people effectively and efficiently.

As an accountant, you can help the public understand how their donations can provide a tax break. Even though most people want to give, many need to know they’ll get something in return, and tax relief is at the top of everybody’s list. If children do become your cause, think about the shelters, schools and hospitals you could be helping with your education. It may not sound like a heroic job, but it is definitely one of the most important jobs in the nonprofit sector. If the money is poorly managed, the organization’s mission cannot be achieved. However, whatever you choose for your nonprofit career, you will definitely be making an important difference.

Many generous people love giving to charities and they do so on a regular basis. A person can donate anything from furniture to cash to even his or her own time, depending on the needs of the charity. Pledging is a common term used in the world of charity organizations.

Pledging basically means that a person will promise to donate a certain amount of money to a charity. The idea of pledging is to get more donations by allowing people to promise money which they may not have at the time. Many people want to donate money to charity, but when they are asked do not have the cash immediately available to hand over. This is when running a pledge drive for a charity organization is a good idea. People can pledge the amount they are wanting to donate and then fulfill his or her promise at a later date when they have the cash available.

Giving a donor the ability to make a pledge of a donation is a good way for a charity to potentially raise more money for its cause. An even greater benefit is that pledges allow donors to pay in a variety of ways. Old ways of charity raising such as door to door knocking and shopping center fundraising only allowed for people to donate in cash. A person who has pledged money generally then has the option of paying the charity in a variety of different ways including cash, check or credit card.

You should not make a pledge unless you know you can fulfill it as many charities see it as a contract.

Many believe that you reap what you sow, meaning what you give to the world, you receive in some way. Because of today’s economy, many families and individuals are struggling to make ends meet, keep their home, or even feed themselves or their children. This makes the work for charities increasingly important. Whether donating money to a local charity or donating one’s time, both gestures are positive, selfless acts of one’s self.

Volunteering One’s Time

Many charities such as the Salvation Army, Purple Heart and Goodwill (just to name a few) are constantly reaching out for volunteers. Volunteering is an admirable act of giving to your community and those in need. Many charities have soup kitchens, offer clothes to the homeless and plant trees and gardens throughout communities, just to name a few of their projects. Each charity has a different agenda and goals’, so contacting them directly is important to discovering where your talents lie. Various charities also work with disaster relief and often send their volunteers to various locations both nationally and internationally to help relief efforts.

Using a search engine such as Canada 411 will help you find a variety of local charities that may require your items, your time or your donation. This search engine with not only give you their contact number, but also a map of where to find them and a website to browse. From there, you can determine which charities work best with your abilities, the time you have available, or the items you have to give.

Good Items to Donate to Charity

Have you ever had a piece of furniture that you simply don’t want anymore? It’s been well cared for, and looks great, but it just doesn’t appeal to you. The best thing to do besides throwing it away is to donate it to charity. If an item no longer has the worth or value it once had, giving it to an organization to use benefits not only them, but also your conscience.

People tend to toss out items every day without thought. We have to remember there are others who may be less fortunate than us. These people can benefit from our gently used items. You’re not limited to just furniture, there are many good items to give to charity. Gently used children and adult clothing is a good item to give. Make sure it’s thoroughly washed before handing it over. Used books, or books you no longer read are beneficial. You may have a wonderful book collection that another person would enjoy reading.

Some people tend to donate old tools, computers and movies they no longer want or need. These items are perfect for those in need. And, in addition to going to a good cause, they won’t cost them too much. During the holidays some charity organizations take food donations. This isn’t ready to eat food, but canned and bagged goods. It only takes a few moments of your time to give, and they typically have donation bins settled just outside of grocery stores for your convenience. If you have nothing to give but a few dollars, it’s important to know that even a little amount such as that can make a difference.

Most non-profit organizations raise money for charitable causes. Organizations use the funds for everything from building houses to preserving history. While employees earn salaries, the majority of the funds go toward the charity’s mission statement. As such, the people planning the event often work on a shoestring budget.

If you’re just delving into the world of non-profit fundraising, you may need help finding ways to cut costs without sacrificing promotion. Here are a few classic ways to plan and promote your event:

  • Get Sponsors. Large corporations often look for opportunities to give back to the community. Additionally, businesses may get tax benefits to donate to your event. Check with large companies in your area and see whether they would be willing to purchase promotional materials, like flyers or newspaper ads, or provide funds to cater the event. Sponsors may be more willing to support your cause if you offer to advertise them on the promotional materials.
  • Sell tickets to the event. If you start planning soon enough, you may be able to get the event supplies free or at very little cost. That means the funds you get through ticket sales can go directly to the charity’s goal. You can even host an auction using donated gifts and prizes.
  • Use volunteers. People who can’t donate money may donate time. Have volunteers hand out flyers at the mall or to people walking down the street. Volunteers may go around to local businesses and ask to display promotional materials in the windows or on bulletin boards.

Planning and promoting an event doesn’t have to cost much. Take advantage of sponsors and volunteers to make the event successful.
